The Royal Bank of Scotland has angered unions, staff and the general public by announcing further job cuts over the next two years. 4,500 jobs will be lost in the UK alone as part of a £2.5bn proposal to cut 9000 jobs world wide by 2011.
Unite national officer Rob MacGregor said: “Unite is appalled that thousands of people, who form the backbone of the RBS operations, are to be made redundant. These employees are totally blameless for the current position which RBS is in, yet they are paying for the mistakes at the top of the bank.”
Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesman Vince Cable suggested that Fred Goodwin should spare a thought for the thousands of people he has now put out of work and Scottish Conservative leader David McLetchie continued in the same vein by saying, “I am very concerned about the potential loss of jobs in Edinburgh, where I suspect no-one will be leaving on the same redundancy terms as the Government approved for Sir Fred Goodwin.”
There appears to be no response from the Labour government on the news of the redundancies, despite warnings from the Chamber of Commerce that the job losses will only add to the predicted unemployment figures of over 3.2 million in 2010.
