The UK Government says it is determined not to make the same mistakes as their predecessors in the 1980’s and 1990’s recessions when thousands of young people were “left to be written off as a generation lost to work.”
Facing up to the daunting task Prime Minister Gordon Brown is launching the latest employment drive called Backing Young Britain. The campaign has the backing of 150 companies including Microsoft, Centrica and Virgin Media.
With unemployment currently running at a ten year high the government has said it will give 85,000 young people the chance of training, apprenticeships or jobs in retail or tourism.
Yvette Cooper, Works and Pensions Secretary, says that the extra help will guaranteeĀ young people will not be out of work for more than a year.
It is possible that the government are making the same mistakes as past governments after all, YTS anyone?
