Their heroic bravery has never been in doubt; the Gurkhas have fought across the globe in conflicts past and present - as part of the British Army.
Ironic then that these Nepalese stalwarts have had to seek a judicial review over the fair
treatment of their army pensions - especially when they thought they had already won this war.
In reality, they had only won a battle on the way; in 2007 they had been advised that pensions would be brought into line with fellow soldiers.
Not so, the expected equivalence to be provided by the MoD did not apply to the 22,000 Gurkhas who retired before July 1997 and in addition those who could apply had pre-1997 years calculated disadvantageously.
In a flagrant infringement of the Human Rights Act and any EU discrimination law you care to think of, this would be abhorrent in any work situation, let alone where employees are expected to risk their lives.
Gurkha welfare society chairman, Major Tikemdra Dai Dewan commented, “The Gurkha plight remains unresolved.”
