Check your Council Tax, 400,000 could be wrong

James Stafford - Monday 10.03.08, 06:33am

As we approach the season of less-goodwill, when the letterbox-clang may well be bringing your council tax demand, it’s worth remembering that up to 400,000 properties are estimated to be in the wrong band - and paying too much tax.

The reason for this is that the bands themselves are base-lined on estimated house prices in the second quarter of 1991. If this is off-beam for your property you may be paying too much to your council.

So check it out. First off, ask your neighbours [with similar properties] which band they are in. No need for embarrassing chats about cash, all you need to check is whether their band matches yours.

Next check is to visit moneysavingexpert.com, they’ll help you through finding out the value of your property and reworking it to 1991 figures. Then you just check if the 1991 banding fits your band now. If it doesn’t they’ll tell you what to do about it.

Even if you don’t save money, the great spin-off from this is you get to see a list of all the prices that houses in your road have actually sold for recently…rather than what your neighbours told you!
