The coming long bank holiday weekend may be slightly quieter than other years as homeowners lay down their power tools and take a financial step backwards before considering the next DIY project.
Irrespective of the recent budget the last six months has been hard on the pocket and big
plans for home improvement have had to join the queue for the discretionary spend just like everything else.
Owners of Argos and Homebase, Home Retail, predict a fall in sales of around 2% and 4% respectively for the two chains.
Traditional competitors and market leaders, B&Q [owned by Kingfisher DIY group] will also feel the lack of enthusiasm for domestic make-overs and both groups know Tesco Direct is hot on their heels in the like-for-like sales market through their internet and catalogue businesses.
So the Easter break may sound like it used to: gardens full of owner’s cursing their non-responsive lawn-mowers.
But who knows, by the third day even they may be encouraged back into life.
